Get to Know Your Favorite Condiment: How Sriracha is Made
1. The Chili
When it comes to popular Sriracha brands, Huy Fong Foods is one of the most popular in the world. This may be because their sauce uses a red jalapeño-hybrid chile pepper, which gives their Sriracha’s its signature kick of spice.
Huy Fong Foods grows their chilies on Underwood Ranch. This farm takes up roughly 1,700 acres of land. The land stretches from Ventura County to Kern County, California. Huy Fong Foods plants their famous chili peppers during the month of March.
2. Chili Harvest
David Tran is the creator of the Sriracha chili sauce. He uses a specific type of machinery on his farmland which reduces waste and returns unwanted elements back into the soil. While the machinery gets rid of inedible materials like rocks and twigs, it also clears away unwanted or unusable chilies.
3. Harvest Periods
The machine harvests the chilies from mid July until October. The first few harvests come at a time when the chilies are greener. This allows the sauce to have a more muted-red color. Ultimately, the later the harvest, the brighter the red hues of the sauce.
Not long after harvesting, the chilies go to the Huy Fong Foods processing facility. The facility is in Irwindale, California. It takes a total of 650,000 square feet. This huge size is understandable, given the fact that Underwood Ranch brings in about 30 loads of chilies every day.
It’s important to note that the company does not add food coloring in its products. Consequently, each bottle may differ in color from one another. The hue simply depends on the date of the harvest.
The chilies go through a wash, crush, and mix process upon harvest. Afterwards, staff members and machines work together to add more ingredients to the sauce. These ingredients include sugar, garlic, salt, distilled vinegar, sodium bisulfite, potassium sorbate, and Xanthan gum.
While Huy Fong is Foods is the most popular brand of Sriracha, it’s important to note that other brands of Sriracha may taste different. This is due to the ratio and kind of ingredients used. However, even among these variants, there are two basic tastes that should always resonate within the Sriracha condiment: heat and garlic. These two flavors are always present in Sriracha sauces, regardless of the brand.
5. How to Enjoy
Sriracha continues to be a mainstay in America. Many say it’s a food fad and condiment cult. However, everyone still seems to love it and restaurants continue to stock it even after the hype has died down.
To enjoy this popular sauce, many people put a drizzle of Sriracha on their phos, burgers, and sandwiches. Other prefer to mix it in with their favorite dips. Huge fans go the extra mile.
